When you are assigned a client to do a makeover for them, this means don't be unprofessional and bully them about their flaws...

I just recently watched a recent episode of Project Runway Season 10 and was totally flabbergasted (side note: I am so excited to use this word in my blog!) at the totally horrendous and unprofessional behaviour of one of the designers in the competition.  Yes, I am talking about VEN!!  I did like his first look with the rose draped top but he has seriously got an ego problem.  The challenge (and hello it is SEASON 10!!! so these designers should be expecting a "real world"/non-model challenge) was to work with L'Oreal hairstylists on giving 10 women a makeover.  Some designers rose to the challenge and also worked well with their clients, others unfortunately went down in flames.  I was seriously shocked at Ven's horrid remarks about his client's size (sorry to be mean Ven but have you looked at yourself in the mirror, as Nick V said in his blog "Honey, you ain't no waif..."?) and "lack of fashion".  Unfortunately in society and especially in the world of fashion, there are certain idealised images of what is considered to be good or to be the norm.  As a curvy Chinese girl, I have always had issues with my size and have grown up with remarks about being too fat and had shop assistants say "XL is your size" or look at me with pity.  It has only been in recent years that I have become more comfortable within my own skin but that does not mean that I still don't feel vulnerable.  I really felt for Ven's client Terri and her friend who had wanted the makeover for Terri to make her feel special and to celebrate how wonderful she really is.  It was heartbreaking to hear such hurtful remarks from Ven and the fact that he literally just gave up on the challenge and blamed his poor performance on the client.  It made my blood boil.  1) She is your client, you should at least remain a professional 2) yes in the fashion world most people are skinny but in the real world we all have our own "lumps and bumps" which we might not be happy with.

For someone who claims to know everything about design, workmanship and have exquisite taste in choosing material, he chose turquoise blue satin for a smock top and then a garish zipper up the front of her skirt.  We are talking about finding something for a professional woman who has a family too.

In the words of Tim Gunn...Ven, you really did not "make it work"!  Ok rant over...

Who doesn't love a man with sparkly shoes?

Ok this might be a little bit of old news but going on with my trend of eclectic boy crushes (Fassbender, MGG etc.) I wanted to write about one of my favourite Brit actors at the moment.  Bennedict Cumberbatch (even his name is fantastic but he must have got a lot of stick for it at Harrow) rose to fame predominantly through the hit modernization of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes.  Cumberbatch played the titular Sherlock. Unconventionally attractive, he has a long gangly frame, horsey features and curly ginger hair (unless it is dyed for his Sherlock role).  However, he has made the GQ Magazine's top 50 best dressed  men list.  He knows the power of a well cut suit but my favourite part of his wardrobe is that he has sported a lovely pair of glitter shoes at quite a few events.  Now, who can resist a man who is comfortable enough within himself to add a little sparkle to his wardrobe?  It is not bling like the rappers such as Kanye West but I think it adds a little bit of whimsy to what might be a very severe suited look.  Good show Bennedict!

Quirky and then some....the Mr. Nice Guy: Matthew Gray Gubler

Matthew Gray Gubler is one of my current boy crushes at the moment (if you listen to my friends, I have VERY eclectic taste in men!)  For those who do not know of MGG, then you have missed out on Criminal Minds where he plays the awkward genius that is Dr. Spencer Reid.  I love MGG because within his everyday wardrobe as well as his influence with his onscreen wardrobe, he truly expresses a quirky, slightly macabre yet fun way of dressing.  Eccentric might be the best word to describe MGG's wardrobe.  He kind of reminds me of Jarvis Cocker in his hey day but instead we have MGG who is happy, smiley and bouncing around like a puppy especially when he sees baby birds in his back garden!  Ok, here are some of the Gubler's fashion tips:

Odd socks

Apparently in real life and on screen, MGG insists on wearing odd socks otherwise it brings him bad luck.

Wearing a mixture of vintage, preppy, designer and his own design!!

MGG is an artist and has created some T shirts of his own designs which sell out quickly on his website.  Check out his website....it is so much fun!!  He likes his flannel suits and dotty professor looks but also smartens up nicely when he needs too!

Dr. Spencer Reid from Criminal Minds Look

Can you really tell the difference?

Anyway, what ever look he sports, he still remains his own person and his own spirit.  Such individuality and genuine joy for what he does is something we should all aspire to!

Fearless...the incredible and individual Joey Ma!

Hong Kong can be such a slave to stereotypes, especially with men's fashion and that is why I love and admire the HK style icon Joey Ma. He is fearless in his love of fashion and simply wears whatever inspires him.  I am honoured to hopefully count him as a friend.  When you meet him he is incredibly sweet and modest yet he looks fierce.  His website: www.joey-ma.com is incredible and his hard work and passion is finally being recognized by the HK media.  He has done some styling with the evergreen Do Do.  JOEY I LOVE YOU!!!

The first step is always the hardest...

The lovely Nicole Warne....one of my style muses....

Check out her blog at: http://fellt.com/garypepper

This is about the 100th time that I have tried to start a blog.  As they say, the path to hell is laden with good intentions.  Anyway, here I go.  Originally I wanted to do a fashion blog about my love for Marks and Spencer (the love is still there) but there are so many other fashion bloggers who are so much more knowledgeable and so much more incredibly stylish than me.  A case in point is one of my fashion inspirations, the ever lovely Sharon McM who has her own incredibly witty blog (http://sharonsgotthebeat.blogspot.hk/).

One of my other style heroes at the moment is the lovely Nicole Warne from Gary Pepper Vintage.  For someone so young, she has developed an incredible style and has progressed so far with her fashion blogging career (I am incredibly jealous of her trip to Shanghai courtesy of Louis Vuitton!)  The main reason for my love of Nicole is that she is effortlessly stylish and is able to achieve that delicate balance of mixing high-end luxe labels with high street and vintage.  This style is something that I would like to aspire to.  I have been increasingly looking to online stores such as etsy to source vintage finds and have found it both engrossing and rewarding too.

Ok, I think that is enough for my first foray into blogging....hopefully more to come soon!
